Some of the earliest evergreen trees decorated with ornaments and lights originated from Pagans in Europe who brought branches into celebrate winter festivals, decorate their homes, and brighten their spirits during the winter solstice.

Today millions worldwide of different cultures and faiths still embrace the tradition of  festive decorations. As we wrap up the year this holiday season we are invited to get curious about our own understanding of traditions and celebration both on and off the yoga mat.

You’re invited to reflect upon the following:

Who are your teachers?

Who did they learn from?

What yoga traditions do you practice?

How did they originate?

Reflections such as these can serve to build greater awareness and respect for the practices we are traditionally taught generation after generation. In understanding our own role to the greater whole we can deepen our personal growth and collective integrity.

How you honor your practice this season truly does matter:

  • Honor your practice through the ways in which you shop small, local, and sustainable.

  • Honor your practice by supporting Black and Indigenous businesses while educating yourself on the traditions we condone on behalf of colonial atrocities.

  • Honor your practice in reducing both food and paper waste as the times call for extravagant recipes and gift-giving.

  • Honor your practice and opt for a recycled/reusable tree.

  • Honor your practice by respecting your cities health and safety guidelines for the well-being of others

When we align our values with right action we honor our practice in more ways than one. A ripple effect is created through seemingly unconnected timelines that do in fact trace back to an original tradition. Get to know these lifelines as the impacts are important now more than ever in our expansion of celebrations rooted in truth. Get curious about the beginnings of your practice. Ask about your own family traditions. Normalize the discourse of transparency this holiday season and honor your practice through the light of your awareness.

With Love,

Rosie
